In the lower Liang dynasty, “bag” monk from Changting in Fenghua, dubbed “Mr. Changting” then, visited the secular life, and now he is recognized as the incarnation of Maitreya. Fenghua is home to bag monk, the land where the Chinese Maitreya passed away. Yuelin Temple is the temple where bag monk lived and passed away, Xuedou Temple is the rites-performing place of bag Maitreya whose body was buried in Zhongta Temple. As approved by State Bureau of Religious Affairs, on November 8, 2008, the world highest sitting Maitreya Buddha statue was unveiled in Mt.Xuedou of Fenghua, and the celebration was attended by nearly 10,000 senior monks and Buddhists as well as friends from all communities home and abroad. The Giant Buddha scenic area has an overall planning area of 52 hectares, including six major functions, such as the core zone, bowing worship area, Maitreya sculptures area, cultural relics exhibition area, leisure and self-cultivation area, and tourist shopping area. The first ever eco-road in Zhejiang – Maitreya Avenue is connecting the Giant Maitreya Buddha in Xikou, Yuelin Temple and Zhongta Temple in Fenghua urban area and other destinations into an organic integration, enriching the meanings of Maitreya scenic area.
