Recently, forest rangers in the Dayan Town accidentally discovered more than 10 snow white plants while patrolling high mountains. They only saw their "heads" hanging slightly and emitting fluorescence in the dark. After confirmation by local agricultural office staff, the plant is identified as a rare and endangered plant in China, the Indian Pipe.

It is learnt that Indian Pipe belongs to the family Pyrola and is a perennial herbaceous saprophytic plant. It is pure white and cannot undergo photosynthesis. It relies on decaying plants to obtain nutrients. Due to its unique way of living, it is also known as the "Ghost Pipe" by the people, and there are records of its discovery in southern China. Due to the strict requirements for the growth environment, although the distribution range of Indian Pipe is wide, their quantity is quite rare.

"In recent years, the natural ecological environment in our district has been continuously improving, and people in various regions have found more and more records of cherishing wild animals and plants." Wang Jie, Head of the Ecological Department of the Fenghua District Ecological Environment Sub-bureau, told reporters that in the regional biodiversity background survey in 2023, multiple national first-class protected plants such as Cycas, Shaniodendron subaequale, Camellia azalea and so on were recorded. In addition, the national first-class protected animal Yellow-breasted Bunting was also discovered. Such discoveries, including the discovery of Indian Pipe, intuitively reflect that the population and distribution density of animals and plants in our district are on the rise, and that biodiversity protection has achieved substantial results.
